Every other day we hear about big companies prioritizing profits over our health and the environment, knowingly dumping poisons in our water and food supply. It’s downright depressing.

What if someone demonstrated that a successful business could also do right by people and the planet?

Well, someone — or rather a whole bunch of someones — has! So far over 1800 companies, including Stonyfield Organic, have become certified as B Corporations.™ Becoming a B Corp means a company has gone through a rigorous certification process to evaluate their “social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.”

I’m a firm believer in voting with our dollars to support businesses that behave responsibly toward consumers and the planet. As much as possible, I want my money going to create a better world, not one with even more dangers to our health and the environment. The B Corps certification is a useful tool so we can make more informed decisions.

When we shop, it can be hard to know the impacts of our purchases. I use all the tools I can to help me choose products I can feel good about buying. This means looking for organic certification to find food raised without harmful chemicals. In others, it’s looking for the GreenGuard or others seals that help me choose less toxic cleaning or personal care products. I think carefully about packaging and environmental impact when I pick one item over another. B Corps certification helps me evaluate a product’s of social and environmental impact.

How wonderful that all of us voting with or dollars has prompted more companies to see the value of treading more lightly on the planet!

Building a Better Planet, One Bite at a Time

To celebrate their B Corps status, Stonyfield sent a box full of B Corps products, everything I needed to make a healthy and socially- and eco-conscious breakfast for my family. It included some Stonyfield grassfed organic yogurt, granola from purely elizabeth, Pukka “clean matcha green” tea, King Arthur  sprouted wheat flour, some method clementine gel handwash, and even a preserve toothbrush. It also included a coupon for some organic eggs from Pete and Gerry’s Organic, which I’m looking forward to trying when they’re back in stock at my local supermarket. I plan to try out this tempting recipe for banana carrot power muffins from fellow Stonyfield blogger Run Far Girl!

Some B Corporation highlights:

Stonyfield began in 1983, as a nonprofit organic farming school that included seven cows. Founders Samuel Kaymen and Gary Hirshberg used the cows’ milk to make yogurt, which “People went crazy for.” The farming teachers saw an opportunity to “show the whole world that a company could make healthy, delicious food without relying on toxic chemicals that harm the environment and public health.” The rest is yogurt history.

Now the leading organic yogurt company, Stonyfield rejects the use of toxic pesticides, artificial hormones, antibiotics and GMOs. They also take the impact of their operation seriously, not just what’s in the yogurt, but how the package is made and gets to consumers as well. Their B Corps status is just one more way to measure their promotion of “healthy people and a healthy planet.”  

My four-year-old taste tester thought a breakfast of Stonyfield blueberry yogurt with purely elizabeth granola was not only delicious, but fun to eat. At purely elizabeth they believe that “good health goes beyond what we put in our mouths.” Trained in integrative nutrition, company founder Elizabeth Stein sources healthy, gluten-free, and organic ingredients for her signature granolas. And it’s yummy!

While kids crunched through breakfast, I enjoyed sampling some Pukka “clean matcha green” tea with dandelion, fennel, and lemon. It’s smooth and herb-y, and has become one of my favorite daily teas. Pukka is carbon neutral and zero waste, a company whose “mission is to connect people, plants and planet.” I’m all for that!  

The B Corps celebration box also included a coupon for some organic eggs from a company called Pete and Gerry’s Organic. Pete and Gerry also have some serious green cred worth celebrating. They became America’s first Certified Humane egg producer in 2003 and were the first egg producer in the US to earn B Corp Certification.

We used the container of method clementine gel handwash to wash up before breakfast. Method proudly proclaims that they’re

in business to change business. In the same way we take the dirt out of cleaning, we strive to eliminate some of business’s dirty practices. We believe our business practices and processes should be as clean as the products we make.

The box even included a preserve toothbrush — made from recycled yogurt cups! — for cleaning teeth afterward! Preserve is a super-cool company that created the Gimme 5 recycling program, which collects #5 plastics, a plastic that’s not often recycled. They use it to make, toothbrushes, razors, and tableware. Stonyfield is a recycling partner.

How wonderful to enjoy a breakfast with such purposeful intention to do good in the world. Plus it tasted great and the kids loved it!
